Beeswax is produced by young workers bees, 10-15 days old, from special glands and it is used by them in order to build honeycombs.

Beeswax in Greece



Beeswax has a long tradition in the Greek culture. The first  references  are  in  the  Odyssey,  where Ulysses (Odysseus)  used  beewax  in  order  to  cover  his  ears from the Siren's song. What is more Daedalus used beeswax in order to build his wings and fly from his prison. 

Beeswax  was  used  in ancient  Greece  as  a medicine  in  order  to  heal  burns,  rushes,  traumas, dermatitis, ear infections and stomatitis. What is more it was used in cosmetics.  Later, the beeswax was utilized by the Greek Orthodox Monks in making candles and therapeutic creams and balsams. Especially, the Greek Monasteries in Mount Athos, have developed recipes using beeswax, olive oil and herbs such is incense or thymes and propolis in order to make herbal, biological, organic creams.
